Samuel Ortega Sarmiento received the BSs degree in Telecommunication Engineering (5-years degree) and the MSc and Ph.D. degrees in Telecommunication Technologies from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), Spain, in 2015, 2016 and 2021. He achieved the Cum Laude qualification, the International Mention, and the Extraordinary Prize of PhD of 2020/2021. In 2015, he started to work as Project Manager and Researcher in the HELICoiD European Project. In 2018, he obtained the Predoctoral Research Grant of the Canary Islands Government. In 2019, he performed a research stay in the Department of Bioengineering at The University of Texas at Dallas (USA), under the supervision of Prof. Baowei Fei, one of the world leaders in the use of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) for medical applications. In 2021, he started to work as Postdoctoral Researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Food Fisheries and Aquaculture Research (NOFIMA AS), a relevant international research institution. He has performed several international collaborations with many relevant research institutions. His research interests are the use of hyperspectral imaging for medical and food quality applications, which include instrumentation, experimental design, and use of image processing, machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques.
