The Government of the Canary Islands approved yesterday, March 23, 2023, the Microelectronics and Semiconductors Strategy of the Canary Islands 2022-2027, CanaryChip, in which the IUMA of the ULPGC has played a decisive role in its promotion, especially with the help of Professor Antonio Núñez.

CanaryChip's main objective is to promote the coordination, development and growth of the Canary Islands ecosystem in terms of microelectronics and Semiconductors in the Canary Islands. To this end, it is proposed to attract investments with the aim of developing production capacities in the Canary Islands for the entire value chain of the semiconductor industry, and the attraction and retention of talent in the field of microelectronics.

In the Canary Islands there is a set of companies and knowledge centers on microelectronics and semiconductors that have developed over the last decades, whether in the design of chips, complex electronic systems, and even in the development of optical processes for manufacturing. chip. They have established the Chip Canarias Cluster, with 717 direct highly qualified jobs and an approximate business volume of 78 million euros. These companies were integrated last summer into what is called the Canarychip ecosystem of Microelectronics and Semiconductors of the Canary Islands, formed by the Chip Canarias Cluster and other companies, the scientific centers IUMA-ULPGC and IAC, and other competent public agents in the sector in the Canary Islands.

In the document titled «CANARYCHIP: microelectronics and semiconductor strategies of the Canary Islands 2022-2027»  The approved strategy is detailed in 53 pages. This is the document that « where the support framework is designed, by the Public Administration of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, to the development of the microelectronics and semiconductor sector of the archipelago. The document describes the context of the CanaryChip strategy, where the strategic scenario and the set of strengths that the Canary Community presents in the microelectronics sector are presented, as well as the opportunities presented by the current context. The initiative describes the four main axes of action: Axis I: Promotion of the Canary Islands as a destination for investments in microelectronics and semiconductors, Axis II: Promotion of the participation of the CanaryChip ecosystem in the actions of PERTE Chip, Axis III: Promote the use of instruments of the European Union to encourage investments in microelectronics and semiconductors andAxis IV: Complementary actions. Finally, the governance mechanism and the strategy monitoring indicators are described.
