IUMA’s STRATUM project featured on Televisión Canaria’s Telenoticias

On Monday 10 August 2026, Televisión Canaria (RTVC)’s news programme broadcast a prominent feature on its Telenoticias 1 (TN1) programme focusing on the European STRATUM project (3D Decision Support Tool for Brain Tumour Surgery), which is coordinated globally by the University Institute of Applied Microelectronics (IUMA) at the ULPGC.

During the broadcast (at the 28-minute mark of the news programme), the regional broadcaster’s news team highlighted the scale of this research, which is funded by the European Commission to the tune of 10.7 million euros. The report detailed how the international consortium — led by ULPGC professor and IUMA member Dr. Gustavo Marrero Callicó— is making progress in the development of a revolutionary medical tool based on artificial intelligence and hyperspectral imaging.

The television feature emphasised the project’s significant clinical impact, the aim of which is to assist neurosurgeons in real time during complex brain tumour operations. This 3D technology will enable the tumour margins to be delineated with the utmost mathematical precision and correct the so-called ‘brain shift’ (the displacement of brain tissue that occurs when tumour mass is removed). In this way, the removal of cancerous tissue is maximised, drastically reducing the risk of damaging critical healthy areas responsible for speech, memory or mobility.

The report also highlighted the prototype’s clinical validation phase. The Doctor Negrín University Hospital of Gran Canaria stands out as one of three cutting-edge medical centres in Europe chosen to integrate and test this system directly in their operating theatres, placing Canarian research and healthcare at the forefront of international technology.
