The University Institute of Applied Microelectronics (IUMA) is offering three full-time research contracts (ICP2 MECES 3) for scientific and technical activities within the framework of the European project H2TRAIN (“Enabling digital technologies for Holistic Health-lifestyle motivational and assisted supervision supported by Artificial Intelligence Networks,” GA 101140052), co-funded by Horizon Europe and the State Research Agency of the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities, and managed by the Canary Islands Science and Technology Park Foundation of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Under the coordination of the H2TRAIN project's Principal Investigator, the successful candidate will undertake the following scientific and technical activities:

Responsibilities

Hardware Design and Development

  • Design and fabricate biosensor devices using 1D and 2D materials for the accurate detection of biomarkers such as lactate, cortisol, and C-reactive proteins.
  • Integrate advanced biosensors into microelectronic (CMOS) platforms to improve their performance, sensitivity, and miniaturization.
  • Develop and implement physical activity meters based on inertial and ultrasound devices.
  • Define the electronic components and system architecture for the data analysis devices.

Programming and Validation

  • Program and validate embedded systems for the efficient integration of sensors into devices.
  • Perform validation and field testing of embedded systems to ensure their reliability under real-world conditions.

Energy Management and IoT

  • Develop innovative energy management solutions, including the design of storage systems using supercapacitors and batteries.
  • Optimize the energy efficiency of the devices to enable continuous operation.
  • Integrate the devices with IoT platforms to ensure connectivity and interoperability in digital health environments.

Artificial Intelligence and Data

  • Apply artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to analyze large volumes of biometric data generated by the biosensors.
  • Design intuitive user interfaces to visualize and manage biometric data on mobile devices and digital health platforms.

Project Management and Dissemination

  • Contribute to the development of project management methodology and tools.
  • Attend dissemination events and participate in the publication of project results.
  • Provide support in drafting project reports and other technical documentation.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Hold a master's degree or equivalent (MECES 3) in the Engineering and Architecture branch. Specific degrees mentioned include Master's in Applied Electronics and Telecommunications, Telecommunications Engineering, or Industrial Engineering, among others.
  • Languages: English level B2 of the CEFR is required but not mandatory.
  • Nationality/Residency: Must be a Spanish national, a national of an EU member state, or meet the other legal residency requirements in Spain as specified in the call.
  • Age: Be over eighteen years old

Valued Skills and Experience

Professional Experience

Previous experience (0.1 points per month) in tasks such as:

  • Embedded systems programming (especially low-power systems).
  • Programming for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI & ML).
  • Developing systems for the Internet of Things (IoT).
  • Hardware acceleration with FPGAs for AI applications.
  • Process automation with tools like LabView.

Additional Training

Training courses of more than 25 hours on embedded systems, electrical power systems, smart grids, or renewable energy technologies.

Publications and Communications

  • Scientific or informative publications related to the design of embedded systems and/or hardware accelerators for AI.
  • Presentations at national or international conferences and seminars on the project's key topics.

Mobility

Participation in mobility programs such as Erasmus with ETC certifications related to ICT, energy efficiency, or data analysis.
