The University Institute of Applied Microelectronics (IUMA), through the AP-BYTE_2CAP project, funded by the Interreg MAC 2021-2027 Programme with FEDER funds, will run two training seminars at universities in Cape Verde aimed at undergraduate students. The aim of these initiatives is to familiarise students with the use of advanced technologies applied to precision agriculture.

Researchers Ámbar Pérez García and Alba Martín Lorenzo, from the Division of Integrated Systems Design (DSI) at IUMA, will deliver the seminar “Smart Agriculture: Combining Remote Sensing and Artificial Intelligence” on 15 June at the Universidade Técnica do Atlântico and on 17 June at the Universidade de Cabo Verde. During these sessions, techniques developed at IUMA will be presented, based on remote sensing, artificial intelligence and the analysis of complex images captured by hyperspectral cameras mounted on drones and Earth observation satellites. These tools enable advanced data to be transformed into useful information for monitoring the health of agricultural crops, contributing to the development of innovative solutions in the field of precision agriculture.

The Precision agriculture (or smart agriculture), alongside environmental monitoring and the industrial inspection, is one of the main areas of application in which IUMA has been working for years, utilising optical technologies (RGB, multi/hyperspectral and thermal) and image processing. This track record has led to collaborations with companies and institutions such as TECNALIA, AIRBUS, TTTech, ETRAIR, Singular Aircraft, XRF, B2Space, ZAMAKONA, PLOCAN and ITER, amongst others. As a result of this research activity, DSI/IUMA has participated in more than 20 research projects over the last 15 years and has produced numerous international publications in scientific journals and at specialist conferences.

With this initiative, IUMA reinforces its commitment to knowledge transfer, technological training and international cooperation, contributing to capacity building in the field of digital transformation applied to the agricultural sector.
